Shawnigan Lake Assignment (for those not going) April 26th

Shawnigan Lake Assignment

Shawnigan Lake is a community that was originally designed a resort community for the wealthy elite of Victoria. It’s First Nations’ tradition is largely unknown even to those who have lived there for many years.

It’s most recent history is largely as a logging community but is re-envisioning itself as an eco-tourism centre with strong leadership and remarkable people.

Although there is not much we can do to have you learn about the kind of work we are doing at Ms. Hansen’s farm, below are a few articles about the challenges that the community has faced recently:

On access to water should be a right:

On Shakespeare and Shawnigan

On the recent B.C. Supreme Court Ruling:

Please write a blog post on this issue describing the following:

What is the issue in your own words?

Why are the people of Shawnigan trying so hard to protect this watershed?

What do you think should be done to answer the concerns with this situation?

Shawnigan Adventure! IGS 9
Tuesday, April 26th

9am Leave for Shawnigan (Ms. Paas will lead us in song)

10am  Hosted by Ms. Hansen, she will show us many of the “sustainable” aspects of her farm and we will help by removing three types of invasive species she’s struggled to keep up with (labour for learning!)

Noon Enjoy lunch at any number of vendors in Shawnigan’s beautiful village (or bring your own).

12:45 At the community’s Watershed Office, we will meet Sonia Furstenau, the Area B Director (aka Mayor) of Shawnigan who will introduce us to the challenge of toxic soil dumping in Shawnigan’s watershed. Afterwards we will take a hike of the of the area itself with two guides, Will and Ed. who are experts in geological make-up of the area.

3pm Bus to the “Sanctuary” where we will engage on an Kokisilah ecosystem adventure, afterwards we enjoy a campfire and some sunshine at the North Pool.

6pm The bus will pick us up for the ride home.

Please wear clothing appropriate to hiking, removing invasive species and hanging out in the wilderness. There is the opportunity to buy a lunch or you can bring your own.

Field trip form

For those of you who didn't pick up the field trip form on Thursday, click here to access the document.  If you don't have a printer at home, you can get your parents to write a note acknowledging the date and times and giving permission to go on Tuesday.  Please bring this to class on Monday.  Reminder: the bus leaves at 9:00 am sharp.  Those who are not attending need to go to the Learning Commons, check in with Mrs. Wadsworth and she will tell you what needs to be accomplished during the block.

In terms of lunch, we will be stopping at Shawnigan Lake Village.  There is a coffee shop and a Subway so you can either pack a lunch or purchase lunch from the shops in the village.  We will be heading to Mr. Neufeld's Sanctuary for continued learning, a bonfire and a hotdog roast for dinner.

We will be returning to Claremont by 8:00 pm.

Mr. Neufeld - So sorry about my feistiness today ....
After a brief review of the components of a battery and potential and chemical energy, we discussed the answer to the battery worksheet that you all completed on Friday and wrote notes on electric potential difference (aka voltage) and electric potential energy (see notes here...page 17).  Additionally we wrote initial definitions for us to understand circuits (see notes here...page 2) before starting a lab (Light It Up!  p 280 of textbook).  Answer questions #1-3 in full sentences.

Fri., Apr 1st.

Thanks for reminding me to post, Sabrina, and sorry it is late :)
